the nightclub air.
Severe teutonic beats and orchestras meet rattling electronics. The track Dr.
Mabuse performed the rare feat of
celebrating international success with an unmistakably German Pop sound. The
band was Propaganda and they never again reached
such heights. The salient voice was Andreas Thein. Dr. Mabuse warns us - “Don’t
be a fool” - Andreas’ final comment on his work
with producer Trevor Horn. Thein left Propaganda at the height of their
Blitzkrieg success.
20 years later…
In a soundlab high above the roofs of Cologne, Andreas Thein mixes razor sharp
electro grooves with samples from his seemingly
bottomless sound-archive... It’s an intelligent mixture of pop tunes, dancefloor
beats and complex sound-collage:
LeeLoo Kobayashi is the quintessence of twenty years pop à la Thein.
On the LeeLoo Kobayashi debut album Playthings, film soundtrack mingles with
mysterious melodies. Previously unreleased
vocal tracks find themselves unexpectedly in the context of hard Elektro.
Strikingly fresh new songs and collages run alongside
Brian Eno’s Baby's on fire and Iggy Pop’s Nightclubbing.
Leeloo Kobayashi treads gracefully between dancefloor and iPod with the
certainty of a somnambulist.
Each of the 13 tracks is 100% club compatible yet Playthings is a classic artist
album: the tracks have an associative tale to tell -
the album is larger than the total of its individual parts.
The cover version of Nightclubbing is a hypnotic symbiosis of heavy glamrock
beats and phat electronics. Greedy and Baby's on Fire
pump pure sweat deluxe. Dynamo 5 slips alongside as an ironic homage to the YMO,
and Twenty Dwarfs lures us in with a playful Theremin.
A.Thein = Leeloo Kobayashi
After years of searching it seems as if Andreas Thein has finally arrived in the
guise of Leeloo Kobayashi.
After the split with Propaganda he branched out into the pure pop projects Kino
(with Sarah Gregory) and
Rififi (with French Enfant Terrible model Marthe Lagache). He rounded off the
‘80s as a pioneer in the Acid House scene (Dr.Acid and Mr.House)
and In the 90’s he collaborated with both Boy George and Stephen Mallinder from
Cabaret Voltaire.
Then around the time of the millenium he recedes – and Leeloo Kobayashi is born.

Propaganda in Concert:
Propaganda played on 11/11/2004 at the "Produced by
Trevor Horn" concert
at the Wembley Arena (only) one song "Dr. Mabuse". Propaganda was complete with
Claudia, Susanne, Michael and Ralf on stage.

1/ The long awaited union between two of the most intriguing and respected of
musicians from the 1980s releases its first music in the summer of 2004. Paul
Humphreys, the non-dancing part of the internationally successful electronic duo
OMD, has formed a partnership with Claudia Brücken, the singing part of the
deluxe German pop group Propaganda.
2/ As Onetwo, Humphreys and Brücken fulfil the promise shown during a shared
American tour four years ago. Paul sang loved songs from his past, Claudia sang
loved songs from her past - not just a couple of Propaganda songs, but also
material from her time in the cherished Act and from her cult solo album for
Island. Around the time of that tour, Paul began work with Claudia on some new
Propaganda music, but whilst the Propaganda reunion fell apart, the pair
continued working together on their own material. Something clicked into place.
There was definite compatibility between their voices, their reluctance to cash
in on their previous bands by joining in with any of the nostalgia tours that
have come into vogue, and with how they wanted their music to move into the new
century - they were both respectful of their past achievements, but didn't want
to be shackled by them, or merely revisit them. The first sample of the music
they have written together surfaces on a suite of songs written and recorded
during 2003/4, 'Item'.
1/ 'Item' contains five new pieces, music that draws on their respective
experiences as writers, players, performers and collaborators. It also
demonstrates their passion for the electronic song, their experimental spirit,
the connection that there is between their voices and their melodic and rhythmic
instincts, and the smart updating of their techno romantic sound.
2/ 'Item' features the discreetly majestic Sister, with Paul on lead vocals, and
a song Claudia wrote with Depeche Mode's Martin Gore, the bittersweet and
mesmerizing Cloud Nine. Martin also contributes guitar to the track. There is
another approach to the song 'Sister' entitled 'One and Only' and two pieces,
'Element of Truth' and 'Signals', that reflect in an contemporary light the edgy,
atmospheric side that was always present in their previous groups.
1/ Other collaborators on 'Item' include Bob Kraushaar, who previously worked
with Claudia on the Propaganda material, and was part of the ZTT team that
reimagined Propaganda's glossy gothic masterpiece 'Secret Wish' as 'Wishful
Thinking'. His continuing work as a major part of the behind the scenes Pet Shop
Boys technicians was a particularly important factor in Paul and Claudia
choosing him to mix 'Sister' and 'Cloud Nine'.
2/ 'Element of Truth' and 'Signals' were co-written and co-programmed with Jon
Russell, who had been recommended to them by the producer Pascal Gabriel.
1/ 'Item' is to be initially available as a compact disc that can be purchased
exclusively through eBay, the world's most famous on line auction house.
2/ As eBay’s Jimm Kjelgaard points out in a statement of his own regarding this
release:
“ 1/Eager to take advantage of current technology Onetwo have decided to use
eBay as the vehicle to get their product directly into the hands of the consumer.
Onetwo will be using eBay’s mass marketing appeal in order to make their music
available.”
" 2/ This special project is the brainchild of Jimm Kjelgaard, Stewart King and
Nathan Griffiths. Although eBay employees, they independently run a music
company called Übersonik. They are all experienced eBay sellers who share a deep
love for music and the artists who make it. Their aim is to make sure that the
Artists involved in this exciting new venture make 100 % of the profits from
each unit which is sold via the eBay site. They’ve devised a system that is
simple and easy to understand and which is also highly effective in giving the
Artist and the music buying public the most value for their money.”
1/ Onetwo are pleased and not a little nervous – in a good way – at being the
guinea pigs in this new attempt to find an alternative to the traditional record
label. This way of doing business as entertainers keeps one eye on the past
where music could be held in the hands as a beautiful thing – a record, a tape,
a compact disc, packaged with love and intelligence - and one eye on the future
where music will exist only in the head as a beautiful thing – a very personal
communication that travels straight from the musician to the listener via wires
and air.
2/ The Onetwo music will be produced for There(there), a new label set up by
Paul and Claudia to be the centre of their fiercely independent new operation.
There(there) and Übersonik have formed an informal alliance to help release
Onetwo's 'Item' through eBay. Übersonik act like the initial distributors, as
part of an experiment by them as to the practicality of becoming a new kind of
label, or distribution centre, or music library, or art and entertainment host.
What this basically means is, you can buy Item through eBay, courtesy of
Übersonik, as if you are buying it directly from Onetwo.
1/ Work continues on the debut Onetwo album, with a release date set sometime in
the more or less foreseeable future. A tour of certain parts of the outside
world will fit into a similar time frame. Onetwo will perform music by OMD,
Propaganda, Act and, not surprisingly. themselves, with the occasional surprise
cover.
2/ The relevant site www.theremusic.com will always contain news regarding
Onetwo, There(There), 'Item', further 'Items', the groundbreaking Übersonik/there(there)
union, live shows, future music and basic activity. You can even go there, do
that, and buy the t-shirt.

hear pianist/composer Andrew Poppy (even an exZTT artist).
The name of the album is "Another Language", which is described by Paul as a "Very
naked and acoustic 'one instrument and one voice' album".
There are cover versions of songs by artists as Radiohead, Elvis, Kate
Bush and Franz Schubert on it.

On the new Blank & Jones album called "Relax" is a song with
Claudia Brucken on vocals
called "Unknown treasure". The album will be released on 7. April 2003.
Orderable at Amazon.de as a standard edition and as a limited edition (only

yellow softcover.

Michael Mertens, Susanne Freytag and Ralf Doerper works on a new album.
There are no official information about a release date, because the last time
they work on an album, the release date has been moved to often.
This time they announce the album when it is ready for the market.
Michael Mertens remixed one song for Distorted Reality:
Michael remixed one song for Distorted Reality: In my dreams (The
context mix by Propaganda).
The album of "DR - The fine line between love and hate" is a very fine synthpop
tune, i recently bought it
and i was very impressed about the sound of the album and the good female voice.
The mix Michael did sounds like the duel Y2k mix, a mix made for the dancefloor
with
a very fine rhythm. You could download some MP3 of this album from the official

Interview (in German) with Claudia Brucken in the actual issue
of the german interview magazine "Alert",
availiable at german stores (www.alertmagazin.de).
It is the interview from Gilbert Blecken,which he has done last year with her in
Dusseldorf.
The second (and last) thousand german CD/DVD "Outside
World" are pressed and now
available at stores, buy it before its too late, because no will follow..
The price rises a little bit, because the introductory price was only til
30.June.
The UK version of "Outside World" will be delivered

It was more than needed that ZTT release this incredible CD/DVD. There are
some
interesting notes for this
release:
# The german version is different in Cover/booklet and in the track list, it
contains the
track: p-machinery (Introduction-Connected), which was originally only
released
on a cassette and which is one of the rarest tracks of Propaganda. The track
is digitally
remastered by one of the leading remasterer in Germany: Eroc.
Eroc is know as drummer of Grobschnitt, an old german NDW band, and even for
his
great major hit "Wolkenreise". He is even the man who remastered
some FGTH tracks for
the latest FGTH compilation. All other tracks are from the ZTT archive.
# The UK version contains instead of p-machinery (Introduction-Connected)
the b-side of the 12" p-machinery called "Extracts from Complete
Machinery", which is
p-machinery mixed with "Frozen faces", the first time this track
appears on CD.
The UK CD/DVD will only be sold over the shop of www.ztt.com
, i dont know why they do this,
but i think this is not a good idea (even if the price is fine).
# On the DVD are two small Propaganda tv advertising trailers (around 30sec
each) which
ZTT found in their archives. These two trailers has not been sent on TV and
this is the first
time they see the light of day.
A bitter pill for US & Canada p-fans, the DVD has a region code 2-6, this
means: visible to all
regions except US & Canada.
# The UK CD album is similiar to UK CD/DVD release, only without DVD.
# The DVD has Region Code 2-6, this means playable from Europe to Japan and
Australia,
not for US & Canada DVD players, only if they are codefree !!
Think there is no more to say, we`ve waited so long for this release and i`m
happy that i
was involved in the planning and the tracklist with Repertoire Records. Hope
you like this
collection, it was a hard work (over nearly one year) and costs a lot of
confiction power
and many mails. For me it should be a release with a commercial and a
collectors aspect,
think both will love this compilation.

Claudia Brucken appears as a guest on the new album Harmonizer
of Apoptygma Berzerk.
The song is called Unicorn (duett version) and for fans very exciting, maybe we
hear more the
next time from her.
PROPAGANDA - OUTSIDE WORLD will be released next time.
UK: Two versions (according to the ZTT homepage) will be pressed, one in a
limited edition with a DVD including all (5) Propaganda videos. The limited
Edition is
only availaible in the ZTT Shop on www.ztt.com .
GE: Repertoire Records even release Outside world, its unclear
which versions they release
and if the DVD will be released in Germany. More information next time.

Now its official: Propaganda
has broken up again !
Claudia Brucken has said "The reunion was worth a try, but did not work
out."
She is now focusing her work with Paul Humphreys and Andrew Poppy.
Some tracks were written and produced, but the third line up is still called
off.
I talked to Michael and he
even give me the same information. He said there
were too much problems with their work: the location of the members and
their work in their daily business.
P.S: Fans will get an compensation this spring !!!!!!

is to desperate, no news from the new album release.
Paul Humphreys says in an interview in the actual "Lexicon
Magazine" issue 18, that the new
Propaganda album will be released soon on the german label Repertoire Records,
but this is unconfirmed.

Dr Mabuse 1: The Zance Sampler will just be rereleased in germany from Repertoire Records. Godlike, ZTT couldnt found one of the original tapes of one track, so that the new sampler contains one new track: "DR MABUSE - Instrumental mix": A really godlike inspiration.
Dr.Mabuse 2:
Da Hool aka DJ Hooligan has done a Coverversion from Dr Mabuse.
The track was released on the Sampler "Pop 2001 - Geschichte wird
gemacht" as "album version 3:45 ", maybe a 12" and CDM
release will follow. The track is really cool, it contains no original vocals
but many text frames from the original. The sound is a very hard house sound,
but it comes very good, a fan should have it.
Dr.Mabuse 3: DuMonde
has even grabbed from the Mabuse text:"Never look back" and "Kein
Zurück" are text frames in their song "Never look back".All in
all even a good german house track (yes i like german house and my wife hate me
for that, because i listen it too much),
but nothing really to do with Mabuse, maybe they were inspired from the track,
but nothing more.
Duel:
The german group "Trays" has
released a cover version from Duel based on the Y2K mix.
The CD was released only in US on Syntophy Records "New Wave
Undercover" - Various Artists (SYN025).

Andreas Thein 2:
Now, he writes his biography down as a
book and he is just producing
a new solo album with Rififi tracks and he is involved in more productions,
maybe that a single release will follow.

Meanwhile Propaganda is working hard on their third album and on their first
single release.
The single (name not published yet) is produced by Tim Simenon. It was recorded
in London
(The Hut) and mixed at Skyline Studios at Düsseldorf (Peter Krick). The guitar
work on
this track was done by Martin Gore (Depeche Mode).
Repertoire Records at Hamburg has now re-issued "A secret wish" and
"Wishful thinking"
for Germany, there are no bonus tracks on the records, only the design is
another
(Digipack) and you must no longer bid on EBAY to hold this great albums in your
hands.

For
the Propaganda fan is this cover version of p-machinery (which is a bonus track
on the album) a real hard one, but if you listen sometimes to rock bands
like HIM or
"Die Krupps", what i do, you would really enjoy this CD and the cover
version of p-machinery.
This CD were released in Germany with the bonus tracks, in Norway appears
the bonus tracks only
on a special release of the album, p:machinery ist even a track on the single
"Universal".

Track with Claudia Brücken vocals ???
This is a nice story about the
information from an unknown track with vocals from Claudia.
I`ve received from Adrian (UK) the following information. He has the song "What
u R" from a group
called TOT (mixed by Mike Pickering [M-People] and David Graeme [DJ], they were
the Friday Night DJs for the
famous Hacienda Nightclub in Manchester 1990. "What u R" should
include mixed vocals from Claudia.
Two weeks later I received the
track on Cassette and it was right, a very good dance track with
amazing mixed vocals, i could define the source from the vocals, but after
hearing it, my only wish
was to hold the original in my hand. So i ordered the track in UK on Original
12" and a
Sampler which includes the track. After two weeks i hold it very happy in my
hands and one minute later
on my record player, i was a little bit frustrated. These Vocals are not on the
original 12" and
on the Sampler. I`ve asked Adrian and he said he got it from the Czech Republic,
he has no
more further information. Thats the story about the unknown track, the positive
thing is,
that the track on the cassette is really amazing.
Does anyone knew something more in the Outside World about this track ???

Last time i bought this single: ISLAND / ARIOLA
113 601 a german pressing !
Really interesting is the info sheet, because they
mention that "Kiss like ether" is the single after
"Absolute", but "Kiss like ether"
was the first release of the album.It seems that Ariola startet to release
"Absolute" to conquer the german market,
but this single was never official released in germany.
"Spizz
- The Custard Channel"
There are two tracks with the voice of Claudia on this CD-R: "In
Balance" and "Water" , the third Lifestyle track
isn`t with her vocals. The only bad thing is the format, it is a CD-R, this
means a not very collectable item, but better than nothing.
